- Note*: 1778; A Zachariah Wells was in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1778 when he entered 100 acres in the County lying on New River... between his and Micajah Pennington's land. 9th September. (N 368) 1788, March 31 Micahaj Pennington conveyed 100 acres of land, beginning on the north side of New River... in Wilkes County, North Carolina to Zachariah Wells for 80 pounds. Further research has been pursued in Wilkes County NC for records of Zachariah. Eventually he migrated to Lee Co., Virginia, prior to 1799 where he purchased 900 acres of land lying on both sides od Powell River from Robert Preston of Washington County May 3, 1799 for $1,000. DEED BOOK A, Page 315. April 21, 1814- 120 Surveyed for Zacahriah Wells Sr. Entry made December 18, 1812 assigned to him by John Preston - South side of Stone mountain below Big Stone Gap. Zachariah Wells, Sr. continued to acquire land, lying on the waters of the Powell River, in the general area of Three Forks, and selling much of it to others by the name of Wells, presumably his sons, but no proof to confirm the relationship. December 22, 1819. Zacahriah Wells, Sr. conveyed land by deed from Robert Preston and Isaac Burkholder dated March 11, 1801 to Isaac Burkholder of Botetourt County (DBK 4, p. 35) From the Book of Lee County and Scott County Settlers it indicated that Zachariah Wells settled on Powell mountain in 1792 in a house on the hill. The area was known as Wild Cat Valley, now known as Wild Cat. He was an early settler and pioneer of Lee County . He was a member of the First Church formed for Scott and Lee County. The Church was the Primitive Baptist Church formed in 1798. Lee County was formed in 1856. From: ''Orin R. Wells''
Subject: Big Wells vs Little Wells Response to Barclay Ospital: May we have a short tutorial regarding difference between big and little Wells families? Sorry, sometimes I forget not everyone has come across these ''nicknames''. In the early 1600's there were several Wells families present in Maryland (as anyone who has tried to sort them out to find an ancestoris probably painfully aware). Among them were the descendants of James Wells b: Cir 1640 England whose children included James Wells b: Cir 1675. James II and his wife Ann (surname unknown at this point) were the ancestors of all of the present lines from this family of which we are aware today. James and Ann Wells were the parents 9 known children among which was Col. Richard Wells b: 15 Mar 1722 Baltimore, MD. He is the Richard Wells who married Ann ''Nancy'' Brown and it is this pair that everyone seems to want to attribute their ancestors whether it is correct or not. This is the family that is called ''The Little Wells''. Another family present in the Balitmore area were the descendants of John Wells b: Cir 1675. He and his wife Margaret (surname not proven) had two known children. Their son Charles b: Cir 1702 married Mrs. Sarah Arnold and it is through this pair that all of the known descendants of this line are descended. This is the family that is referred to as ''The Big Wells''. This has NOTHING to do with the book written by Judge J. W. Wells ''The Big Wells Family''. Rather, it had to do with their stature. It is said that the members of the ''Big Wells'' family, both men and women, were very tall and very heavy people. The members of the ''Little Wells Family'' were smaller in stature - probably more what we might term ''normal''. These two families did intermarry and some moved together to areas such as Brooke County, West Virginia; Licking County and Ross County, Ohio. Apparently it was not uncommon for a group of family members to travel together on social visits. The story goes that when a group of the ''Big Wells'' family were seen it was not uncommon to hear the remark ''Here come the Big Wells''. This is how they are supposed to have gotten their nickname. The ''Little Wells'' have probably been given their nickname by recent genealogists just to differentiate them from the ''Big Wells''. Orin Wells ______________ From: Peggy S Wilson Subject: Zachariah WELLS Date: Sun, 22 Nov 1998 09:51:29 -0600 Hi - I found this information in the New River Webpages http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nc/18cncnr.htmand thought it could be of interest to some of the Zachariah WELLS researchers out there. This is an EXCELLENT website with tons of interesting information crossing several ''state lines'' in the migration patterns. The first residents of the New River Valley on the North Carolina side have been a bit more difficult to determine than those on the Virginia side. The 1778 tax list of Wilkes County gives some good clues, however, some of the people on this list were land speculators who never lived what became Ashe County, e.g., Enoch Osborne. There were 83 persons listed on the 1778 tax list, however, only 40 of these persons were on the 1782 tax list (estimated population 250). It appears that the tax assessor missed many of the residents of the trans-Blue Ridge, as many later appear on the 1787 state census. There are others who should have appeared on 1778 list who do not, e.g., Joshua Weaver and Zachariah WELLS. The notation to the side of the valuation indicates if the person was also found on the 1782 tax list of Wilkes and the 1787 census for the portion of Wilkes which became Ashe. Some of this information is duplicated in the following table. Part of the problem is the lack of records. The first record in which the New River denizens are distinguishable is the 1787 North Carolina State Census. http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nc/18cncnr.htm Enjoy! Peggy Sue pwilson411@@aol.com HomePage: http://members.aol.com/PWilson411/indexe.html ________________________ if you read the obituary for Dr. Mayhal Wells son Dr. Zack Wells it talk about Dr. Mayhal Wells as being a herb doctor. there is a book about him called ''The Army of the Caltahan '' by John Fox Jr. I have never seen it but it is also listed in Dr. Zack Wells obituary. Also Dr. Mayhal Wells had another son who was also a doctor Dr. Frank Wells. if you are a herb doctor and good at what you do I guess back in the day it really didn't matter much. __________________________ Herb doctor? I suppose it didn't take a lot of education for that especially in those days. I have seen evidence of a number of early Wells Doctors who appear to have simply studied under another Doctor - sort of on-the-job training. But that was back when they still made house calls. As for the census record not matching your Mayhal Wells, I wouldn't be so quick to write it off. Vinnie was very likely a nickname for Lavina. This would be too much of a coincidence in my opinion. There may also be a number of reasons for the mismatch in children's names. The children born prior to Zachariah Taylor Wells may have been omitted for some reason from the list you have. What names are on the list of children for Dr. Mayhal Wells? What is the origin of that list? I think I know of a person who can tell us more on this but she is not on-line. _______________________ Message Board Post: In the 1870 census of Morgan County, Kentucky there is a listing for a Mahal Wells 51 Physician VA listed with his wife Lavina and among other children a son named Zachariah aged 10. In the 1880 Census of Bath County, Kentucky Mahal Wells 57 Physician VA VA NC is listed again with wife Lavina 56 VA NC NC again a son names Zakariah Wells 19 Physician VA VA VA. This census also lists Mahal's brother James Wells 84 VA VA NC. I believe this James is also known as Blind Jim Wells. Andy ______________________ From: Subject: Re: Hi Kim, The 1856 Letcher Co. Ky.
