He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific theater during the Second World War, then worked for the Defense Department as a military-political officer for international-security affairs in conjunction with the State Department. During the presidency of John F. Kennday, Jr., Wells was charged with developing a counter-insurgency program for the Navy, which resulted in the Navy SEALS, underwater demolition teams, and other semi-secret attack forces. For his work with the Navy "Riverines" in the Mekong Delta, Wells received the Army's Distinguished Service medal, the first navy captain to do so.

W. T. Wells died at advanced age at home near Broadview - Funeral Sunday. Another Confederate Veteran has been called to his last resting place while wishing tha he could take part in the present war. W. T. Wells, age 80, well known and highly respected citizen of the Broadview community died Sat. afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at his residence after a briefs illness. He was a member of the Third Tenn. regiment and fought throughout the Civil war for the cause he thought was right. It was a regret of his declining years that he was not young enough to participate in the present struggle for the liberty of the world. Mr. Wells is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters, J. S. Wells of Tacoma, Wash.; J. E. Wells of Nashville; T. H. Wells of Knoxville; W. E. Wells of Columbia; Mrs. Anna Norman, Mrs. Kate Russell and Mrs. Ida Wells. With veterans of his company serving as pall bearers the funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence. Interment at the family lot at Reese Chapel. Pall bearers were: Ab Adkisson, J. R. Erwin, J. L. Maxwell, Ira Harris, Robert Estes, and Dave McMaury.
