living "lewdly and uncontinently". What crops did he raise, who were his neighbors, where did he live? Could you walk on that ground? Did Grandma wash the church linens, could they sign their name or did they use their mark? What was he worth? Did he sue or was he sued by someone? There is an amazing amount of records pertaining to them if you are just persistent in your search. I have found out all these things mentioned plus a lot more. My theory is, if you cannot enter by the front door, go in by the back door. If you cannot go in by the back door, try the window and if that fails go in by the chimney. There is a way to find the records if you try.

DO NOT take Published genealogies or county history biographical records as proof of facts cited UNLESS there is also cited the proof of what is claimed and where you can locate it. Regarding published genealogies, I recently read one written by a lady who was so proud of her entrance into all the Patriotic societies through the Wells ancestors, who also happen to be the Wells I claim for my husband's ancestors. I have red pencilled the first three pages citing the errors and Proof sources to show she is in error. Someone of you will read that and copy it and claim it as PROOF of your lineage AND BE TOTALLY IN ERROR with ancestors that are not your own. Rather use them as clues to find the proof that is needed.

Use WFRB as a source of help and clues, but obtain the original records wherever possible.

As promised, this issue begins the Blwt application files which are Producing ancestors for quite a few of our Wellsearchers. If yours does not appear, the National Archives will not have a file, unless it is filed under WILLS or some other form of spelling the name WELLS.

I hope that the quarterly version of WFRB will not cool your interest in the Wells problems. Continue sending your queries and Wells records that you have accumulated.

See you again in June, ELAINE
