  - A serious accident occurred Wednesday in the G.C.C. & L. Company's mine No 1 by which Montgomery Brown, Sr lost his life and Thomas Wells and Ralph Reid were seriously hurt. The men were drawing a pillar when the timbers gave way allowing the top coal to fall. Brown was crushed over the abdomen and hips and died at noon. Wells back was hurt and is lying in a critical condition. Reid's face and shoulder was hurt. Wells and Reid were hurt while trying to save Brown, refusing to leave him to certain death.
