Aaron Wells Family #001

Family #001-3
Undated Letter which was probably about 1960 from Bernice Bushfield, 509 Daniel St., Toronto, Ohio

NOTE: The references to Aaron, Zachariah and Moses as children of Richard Wells as set forth by M. L. K. Wells in 1925 are wrong! The letter is included only because it is in the Florence Montgomery collection.

Dear Flo.

I am sending you a couple of articles from Tyler County Journal on the history of the Sistersville schools. I think the mention of the Birkhead - Wells Acadamy will especially interest you. I suppose that is the "Uncle Burgot" mentioned in some accounts. I can never remember any Birkheads in my day, so they must have all disappeared from the annals of Tyler County.

I was also interested in the Brooke Acadamy, the school in Wellsburg, which Mr. Patto mentions.

I hope I answered your last letter but haven't heard from you so may have slipped my mind - my husband has been in the hospital for Exrays etc. Has not been too well with something like colitus but they can find nothing alarming so far. Came home Saturday and is having the rest of the tests in the Out patient department. Thought he was "just too busy to take all that time". One of his partners died this past winter and they have been very busy all spring as this is the time when contracting gets going hard.

I had a letter the other day from a woman in Washington D. C. She is a Stevenson researcher and I wrote to see if she had ever picked up any thing that might show James Wells' wife Ann as being a Stevenson. She is another Stevenson - later - and hadn't but sent some Wells material which must have been taken from Miss Roe's book and then spoke of a will of James Wells in Miscellaneous Wills - Md. Vol. 3 Will #17. Think she intended to mail a copy but left it out. Do you know of that reference?

She also listed some of Richard Wells sons including Aaron, Moses and Zachariah- Now I don't have those and they don't sound very Richardy unless they are of that second family. This seems to be a list made by an M. L. K. Wells of Johnson Co., KY Nov. 18, 1925. At least it was notarized by Notary Public on that date.

M. L. K. Wels was a great grandson of Richard, Sr., grandson of Richard, Jr.

He gives this:
Zachariah Wells - Rev. under Col. Theodorick Bland and Capt. Henry Lee 5th a. Light Dragoons.

Moses Wells of Wells ridge - now West VA. (never heard of it) was born 1747 d. 1830.

According to that Moses would come in right after George who was born 1745.

Aaron Wells with rest of the family took an active part in the War of 1812. he drew a pension for his services. set on a creek called Wells Creek in Mason Co., KY near Washington.

Nathaniel Wells - his war service not known but served in Rev.

With all these boys, we have more than the usual 12 sons of Richard and I think Nathaniel belongs to Alexander Wells.

You probably have all this any way.

Bernice
Bushfield
