- Death*: 17 January 1832; Peter Wells was captured and brought from Africa (thought to be New Guinea)at the age of 7 years and was sold into slavery at age 15. It is recorded that he was over 100 years at his death, according the The Congregational Church Records of Ashfield Ma.. His name is on the CENOTAPH monument at Northwest Cemetery where the death date is July 1829 at age 95. No headstone had been found for the actual place of burial. (research shows that this is most likely incorrect.) He was a slave to Dr. Bartlett's family who came to Ashfield from Conn. Peter was married to Susan Wells who is reported to also be a slave from Conn.and was brought from Africa. She died at the age of 91. Sally Wells, wife of Jube, who was the son of Peter and Susan, died at age 37 on Feb. 18, 1821. She is buried at the Hill Cemetery in Ashfield, Ma.
