At the time he was killed he was with his brother George Milton Wells, as they were in the same company of the 38th. George, himself buried Joel under a cedar tree on the battle field. Apparently, after the war, his body was taken to the national cemetery.
Joel was one of three brothers who served in the Civil War in Illinois regiments. The third was Andrew Wells,

# 1 Virginia Melvina Parkins in Illinois in the fall after the Civil War. After her death in 1902 in Calvin, Oklahoma he moved to Pine Grove, Hood River, Oregon. He married Lydia Blackwelder in Hood River.
He had served in Co. F 38th Illinois Infantry along with his younger brother Joel D. Wells. When in the Battle of Stones River in Tennessee Joel was killed. George buried him under a cedar tree on the battlefield.
