• Death*: 10 June 1917; Illinois, USA; Clarence Wells, the twelve year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wells, of Aurora, former resident of Sandwich, was drowned in the Fox River at Aurora, Monday afternoon (June 11, 1917). At noon he asked for permission of his mother to go swimming after school and was refused on account of the dangers.
  
  When school closed, with other boys he went to the river. Taking off their clothes they jumped into the river which at the point is about seven feet deep. Clarence went down and when he came up he called for help. None of the boys could swim and by holding on to the a ladder tried to reach him but he sank again and did not come up. Peter Lautwein went into the river with his clothes on in an attempt to reach young Wells but could not. He then changed his clothes to a bathing suit and dove into the river three times and the last time came up with his body.
  
  In the meantime, the police had been notified and appearing on the scene attempted to resuscitate the lad by use of a lung motor but failed.
  
  Mrs. Wells was waiting at home for her son to return from school. She feared he had gone to the river and when the sad news was brought to her she fainted.
  
  Mrs. Wells is the niece of Mrs. John Eberly of Sandwich
