The Rev. Laurent D. Wells, D.D was a faithful Lutheran pastor who served the Church from more than 49 years. He graduated from Hartwick Theological Seminary in 1867. He served congregations in Saddle River, N.J.; Canajoharie, N.Y.; Valatie, N.Y.; Shamokin P.A.; Fayette, N.Y.; Third Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rhinebeck, N.Y. (1899-1909); and Ramapo, N.J. Dr. Wells was serving as pastor of Third Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rhinebeck, N.Y. when, on July 10, 1909, a fired destroyed the building. He resigned this call on July 22, 1909. His wife Mary (Minnie) Samantha Benton (married May 20, 1868) died in Rhinebeck, N.Y. May 26, 1902 [age 59 years, 8 months, and 5 days]. Dr. Wells is buried next to his wife in the Wells Family Plot in Midddleburgh, N.Y. Source: Obit, Rhinebeck Gazette, June 24, 1916.
