My Dear Sir
Your letter of the 12th inst came to me at Christiansburg where I was attending and engaged in revival work conducted by the pastor of the M. E.
Church in the park, Rev. N. A. Bonnor, which closed last Friday night.
My grandfather moved from Halifax county, this state, about the year 1819 when my father was three years old. He settled in Lafayette, a small village in the East end of Montgomery Co. His name was Grief Wells. His wife
was a Goodrum before her marriage. To them were born the following children, Laban (who left home and was never again heard from, so far as I know), George,William, Allen, Rebecca, and Grief D. Wells (he only lacked 17 days of being 98 years old). My grandfather lived to be about seventy seven or nine years old I think. I suppose he was born 1775 or 77. I cannot say whether he was in the War of 1812 or not. I do not remember the number or names of all the children of uncle George. To uncle William were born the following hildren, George, Samuel, John, Martha Jane, James, Apolus. The latter dying during the war of 1861-1865. Uncle William was 90 years old when he passed away. Allen, my father, spent most of his life in Montgomery County, but spent several years in Floyd Co., near Broad Shoals where he died February 2, 1902, if I remember correctly. If he had lived until June 14 of that year he would have been 86 years old. Aunt Rebecca married James Moses, to whom were born one daughter, Sarah, and three sons, Jerry, James, and Charlesall living. My mother was a daughter of Archie Graham who was raised in Floyd. I was the only child of this union and lived in Montgomery most of the time until 1870 when I married a daugther of Cornelius Altizer, Esq. To us were born thirteen children, two dying in infancy. One after serving nineteen years in the service of his country going from private to major and according to advice received from war department, "he died July 27, 1918 from wounds received in action" in the world war while in France.
Father and I served in the reserve force during the last year of the war of 1861-1865. All of my cousins, so far as I remember, were in some branch of the service, several of them serving all the four years.
So far as I know the family of Mr. Job Wells and ours is no relation, but it is quite probable they were, as have been informed that he either came from East VA or North Carolina and there seems to be quite a number of people in both sections that have that name.
It may be that Joe Wells, of Salem VA, a grandson of uncle George Wells and E..L. Wells 136 Maple St of same place, grandson of uncle William Wells can give you more definite information about their immediate families than I have been able to do.
