It is also quite likely that James R. would not have known the date, nor even the Kellison's since they didn't adopt him as a newborn. Dan Page found school records dated May 1900 that gave James’ age as six. It is possible that somewhere along in the “official” record the year 1883 was misread or mistyped as a 1888. I haven't found a record to show the maiden name of James' adoptive mother, who is listed as Mary C. in 1870 and 1880 census, so cannot verify that her maiden name was Clark as stated on the California death record. In 1870, Union, Pocahontas WVA: Richard McW Kellison/23 Mary C/26 Cora Emaline/3 Joseph W/ 5 months and in 1880 they are in Bogard, Henry MO Richard M Kellison/31 Mary C Kellison/26 Emma/11 (must be nickname for Emaline) Joseph/9. Note that in no case do the ages change by 10 years between 1870-1880. It appears that Richard and Mary didn't/couldn't have more children after Joseph in 1870, so they might well have been overjoyed at the opportunity to adopt James R. Wells. CAUTION: Re the James F. Kellison age 39/MO who appeared in the 1930 census in Wichita, Sedgwick Co KS with his family, is not the Wells James R Kellison - as that James R Kellison was older and in California with their son in 1930. Kellison seems an unusual name, it is amazing there were two with the name of James, about the same age, both in Wichita KS, though perhaps not at the same time. I did notice a WWI Draft Registration for James Franklin Kellison in the 1918 timeframe – he was in Putnam, Missouri and his DOB was 17 April 1891, which would make him 39 for the 1930 census as this one is. We know our James could not have been born in 1891. When Randolph Wells (James birth father) died in 1941 the family was unable to locate James R. – it was said they thought he went West, perhaps to Idaho. I don’t know if James did spend any time in Idaho before settling in California or if that was an assumption because that’s where Randolph’s daughter, Minnie, who was adopted-out, ended up.
