(yoeman) late of same place, dec'd, to William Hoy, of same place,weaver, John Wells, by his will executed in the Register's Office for Co.,afsd. bequeathed all his lands in his right to his two sons, James Wells, partie to these presents, and John his other son, which yet remains undivided between the two sons. This tract called ''Cippanorton'', bought by John Wells in his lifetime from Thomas Nixon and Mary wife, adm. of Estate of Benjamin Brady, dec'd. John Wells sold part in his lifetime to Humphrey Barret. dated Mar 1, 1748. Signed James (x) Wells and Dorothy (x) Wells witnessed by Daniel Morgan and Hugh Durborrow. (Kent Co. Deed Book N, p. 254) This is James selling some part of his share of Chippanorton to his stepbrother or half-brother William Hoy.

    18 Oct 1749 James Wells, son of John Wells, formerly of Little Creek Hundred, Kent Co, yeoman and Dorothy his wife for 44 lb paid by his brother John Wells in his life time, released unto John Wells, son and only child of John Wells late of said hundred dec'd...and grandson to the afsd John Wells...a tract of land (Chippa Norton in Little Creek Hundred of Thomas Nixon), conveyed part in his lifetime to a certain Humphrey Barrett and the remainder to his two sons.

    This couple disappear from the Delaware records after this date. It should be noted here that Rachel Wells Humphreys in 1769 claimed that her children were the grandchildren of John Wells of Chippanorton. While it has been contended that she may have lied, one feels that -- had there been children born while James and Dorothy were in Delaware -- Rachel would not have made this statement. Lacking information to the contrary, we must assume that this line ended with the death of John Wells III, Rachel's nephew. Nothing is known concerning when James and Dorothy married.1
