  [Haywood Co.] My dear Miss Reeves,Your letter of recent date
  addressed to my nephew Ed Wells, has been handed to me for
  answer, as I am the oldest Wells (nearly 78) living in Haywood
  County.I will start with Wells history with my grandfather,
  Newnam Wells, who was born in Chester County, S.C. on Oct. 29,
  1770. He married Rebecca Edwards Feb.11, 1794.To this union
  were born 9 children. Six sons - Thomas, William, James,
  Andrew, Joseph, and John. Andrew, my father, and Joseph were
  twins born March 27, 1804. Daughters were Nancy, Lucretia, and
  Elizabeth.My grandfather Newnam Wells migrated from his place
  of birth to Rutherford County, N.C. about the year 1805, and
  settled on Broad River in that county, where my grandmother
  died, Sept. 10, 1811. Then, Grandfather with all his children,
  except Nancy who was married in Rutherford County, came on to
  Pigeon Valley in Haywood County in 1818. Here he bought 640
  acres (a full section) of land. This old farm is known far and
  wide as the Wells Farm and if all together as it once was would
  be the finest and most valuable farm in Western N.C. It
  contains 175 acres river bottom and happily I own a small part
  of it; and I am the only living 'child' of my grandparents in
  Haywood County. Now I will tell you something of Grandfather's
  family. Uncle Thomas and Uncle Joseph settled in what is now
  Rockdale County, Georgia, and raised families there. Uncle
  William, who was a doctor, settled in Sumpter Co., Fla., and
  raised his family there. Uncle James settled near Eddyville,
  Kentucky, and raised his family there. Uncle John, who was both
  lawyer and civil engineer, settled in Texas and raised his
  family there. Andrew, my father, lived his life here. Two of my
  aunts, Lucretia and Elizabeth, married and raised large
  families here, all of whom are dead. Now, going back to the
  starting point again: my grandfather had a brother Henry, whom
  I am sure was the head of the Buncombe County Wells family. As
  I remember, he had four sons - Frank (a preacher), and Jack,
  Newnam and Robert - some one of these I feel sure was your
  ancestor. I think I know where I can get more of the history
  and genealogy of the Wells family, and if it is what I am
  looking for, I will let you know and then invite you to come up
  and spend a day or two with us. Then if you are not married and
  in the market for a husband, I might be able to help you land

  letter that Newnam is never referred to as Newman Wright Wells.
  Notice further that if one substitutes the name John for 'Uncle
  Henry' the named sons in the second to last paragraph match
  those claimed for John Wells of Delaware, son of James Wells of
  DE and Surry Co. Finally, in the 1880 census Andrew Wells
  confirms his father's POB as Delaware, not SC. Research of
  Jewell Blankenship 'Nunam Wells and Rebecca Edwards married and
  lived in Rowan Co. for a while after their marriage. Their 1st
  son Thomas was born in Rowan Co. and the next two probably
  were. In 1799 Nunam bought land in Chester, S.C. and lived
  there for a while. Their children starting with Nancy through
  Andrew were born in S.C. Sometime after 1804 the family moved
  back to Rutherford Co. William and John A. Wells were born
  there. Rebecca E. Wells died there in 1811 not quite a year
  after her last child was born. Then, as you know, Nunam
  remarried and about 1820 moved with his 2nd wife and children ,
  with the exception of Nancy, to Haywood Co. There both Nunam
  and his 2nd wife Mary Martin died and both are buried in Bethel
  Cemetery Haywood Co. In all of the old family records, official
  land records, (both Chester Co., S.C. & the N.C.records),
  division of property at death of Nunam, Will of James Wells,
  there is never a middle name of Wright or even an initial
  mentioned for Nunam Wells. 1808 Jones, John / Wells, Newman /

  definitely Numan on sheet; Note here that he appears to have 9
  sons, but this is likely a misunderstanding of the strange
  numbering system of 1820; it appears that three of his four
  sons are 16-18, while one is older. This is more or less
  consistent with the ages given in family history. Note here
  that 2 of his daughters are presumably married by this time.
  Records provide info only for Lucretia marrying by this date;
  both Nancy and Elizabeth are listed as marrying after

  Farm.' This in an area once part of Buncombe Co. By comparing
  1840 census data @@ Newton Co GA with Haywood Co. data, it
  appears that only John was still in the home, while Joseph,
  William, and Andrew were likely all at Newton Co., GA. Census
  1880 NC Numan Wells who settled in Haywood Co.was also born in
  DE according to his son Andrew in the 1880 census Bethel United
  Methodist Church in Haywood County Cemetery contains the grave
  of Newnam Wells died 1-10-1844 - Age 73 years 3 months [per Sandra Wells Shigeno]; this information corresponds with census
  data for Numan, son of James.
  Orin Wells in commenting on a DNA sample stated that the Newnan
  Wells who married Rebecca Edwards was born in Chester Co., SC
  on 19 Oct 1789.¹
