Biographical and Research Notes
There are some major problems with this family. It is clear that all the children named are children of Jonathan Wells because they were documented in "The Account Book"2 started by Jonathan in in 1754 when he was living in Deerfield and kept for many years by members of his family. But, it is not clear whether his wife was Rhoda Newton, as indicated by some researchers, or Abigail Dickinson.
In "The Account Book" is an entry stating "April the 25 1773 mother Dickinson Died. She was ninty years old that month." This was most certainly Hepzibah Wells who married John Dickinson and was the mother of Abigail Dickinson who, we maintian, married THIS Jonathan Wells. The fact that children were named Abigail and Hepzibah but not Rhoda would tend to strengthen this probability.
Rhoda Newton is a major puzzle of it's own. Not only have some researchers associated a woman by this name with this Jonathan Wells, but also with Daniel Wells (his son) and with Daniel Wells, son of Samuel Wells and Margaret McCullis.
In addition, some other researches have confused the children of this family with those of the Jonathan Welles who was a son of Ebenezer Welles and Mary Waite.
From the will of John Dickinson mentions "to my Daughter Abigail Wells I give the sum of twenty six pounds 13-4 Lawful money."
