Dear Mrs. Fishback:
I started to include you in a WELLS ROUND ROBIN CONFERENCE, then you wrote to say you had HIRED a Maryland genealogist to trace your WELLS ancestry for you. Hence, I dropped your name from later correspondence.
NOW I THINK I MADE A MISTAKE!!
In your letter of 4 Agu 1961, you speak o fbeing a descendant of Samuel Wells, Jr. and his Virginia born wife, Elizabeth Tover. You also, speak of Samuel Wells, Sr. of Kentucky.
I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU!!
SAMUEL WELLS and WILLIAM WELLS - brothers - were military officers in KENTUCKY and there fought the Indians.!!
THEIR FATHER, SAMUEL WELLS, SR. and his brother, HAYDEN WELLS, were the FIRST SETTLERS at BEAR GRASS, KENTUCKY.
THEY, IN TURN, WERE SONS OF CHARLES WELLS OF STAFFORD CO., VA.
BUT THEN WENT OT BEAR GRASS, KY. VIA JACOB'S CREED ABOUT 20 MILES SOUTH OF PITTSBURGH, PA.
DO YOU STILL WANT TO HIRE YOUR GENEALOGIST??????
OR DO YOU WANT TO JOIN A **FREE** WELLS ROUND ROBIN???
Most Sincerely,
Hammond Crawford
[Note from Orin Wells: Mrs. Fishback is now dead. When she died she had no heirs but left her estate mostly to fund scholarships in Paris, Illinois. Her research material was put in storage with the instructions that should it not prove to be of any value with respect to the scholarship fund that it was to be destroyed after 10 years!!! But in any event was not to be turned over to any single individual. As far as I have been able to determine, the material may still be in the hands of the local bank which serves as the fund trustee. They have been unresponsive with regard to acknowledging whether the collection still exists or to letting us have access to the material let alone turning it over to anyone who could make good use of it.]
