made an incursion in the Indian Terr with large body of mounted militia & destroyed some villages, "no doubt hlf fro of the unfortuante Capt. massacred ....(can't read next line)

1812 - Mar. 12 - Apt. col of the 17th Infantry &p; helped recruit

1812 - "The 17th U. S. Regt. under Col. Sam'l Wells, late Gen Wells of the Militia" [McAfee p103]

When the army was ready to advance against Ft. Wayne, held at this time by the Indians, the 17th Reg. with Col, Wells & Rifle Regt. with Col. Allen formed the right

1812 - his daughter captured (Ft. Dearborn) by Indians. [McAfee p 125]

"Regulars under Wells" prepare to march against Detroit [McAfee p 133, 144]
"You will read with much pain that a fine body of regular troops belonging to the 17th & 19th Refts. under Col. Wells has been nearly destroyed for want of clothing" [McAfee p 196]

1813 - July -

in command of 140 men - Colonel - under Gen. Harrison - taken up the Sandusky to hdq. Seneca where fortified camp constructed. [Fil 14]

1813/4 - with 3 sons at River Raisin (Mich) One sone was missing action. [wisc Publ 20]
son Levi killed - [Heitman] in 17 US Inf.
At Raisin, after Wells had left the camp at Frenchtown, a Frenchman came to Gen. Winchester from Malden (some urged they take Malden before marching against Detroit, which seemed by the majority to have been the thing to do) & said there was a large force of British and Indians (Lewis wa sin this battle). The description of this attack and savage treatment was terrible -- Capt. Simpson wa stomahawked, Col, Allen wounded and an Ind. told him to surrender that he would be safe but when Allen did, he was slain. When Col. Wells returned to the Legislature of Ky, the Theatre was crowded, when Col. Wells arrived abt. 8 that night with information of the massacre at the river Raisin, telling how the very flower of youth of Ky were cut to pieces -- the place of public musement was abandoned for the private fireside for nearly all had some loved one there -- but their indignation was aroused all the more etc., etc. ... 1814 to Mo - [wisc Publ 20]

His grson told Draper that Samuel had been in 32 skirmishes and battles. [Draper 23 S 58]
He was then aged ab 60 when removed to Mo.

1819 - St. Charles - foreman, signed Circuit Ct. document presented to Congress 6 Jul.
