son Levi killed - [Heitman] in 17 US Inf.
At Raisin, after Wells had left the camp at Frenchtown, a Frenchman came to Gen. Winchester from Malden (some urged they take Malden before marching against Detroit, which seemed by the majority
to have been the thing to do) & said there was a large force of British and Indians (Lewis wa sin this battle). The description of this attack
and savage treatment was terrible -- Capt. Simpson wa stomahawked, Col, Allen wounded and an Ind. told him to surrender that he would be safe but when Allen
did, he was slain. When Col. Wells returned to the Legislature of Ky, the Theatre was crowded, when Col. Wells arrived abt. 8 that night with information
of the massacre at the river Raisin, telling how the very flower of youth of Ky were cut to pieces -- the place of public musement was
abandoned for the private fireside for nearly all had some loved one there
-- but their indignation was aroused all the more etc., etc. ... [McAfee]
