• Death*: 3 October 1960; Pleasant Hill, Pike Co., Illinois, USA; Dr. Russell P. Wells, 82, died Monday, Oct. 3. He was born at Pleasant Hill, July 4, 1878, a son of George and Mariam Webster Wells. He attended Stockland and Pleasant Hill schools and was graduated from Barnes Medical College in St. Louis in 1904, and on the 1st of October in 1904 he was married to Alta Cromwell of Nebo, in Bowling Green, Mo. After graduating from medial school he returned to Pleasant Hill and began the practice of his profession in partnership with his uncle, the late Dr. J. Smith Thomas. This partnership continued until the death of Dr. Thomas, and a partnership was arranged between Dr. Wells and the late Dr. James E. Goodman, Sr. This partnership continued for many years. Later they practiced in separate offices. Dr. Wells retired at the end of 54 years practice. Dr. Wells was a booster for his home community and was active in civic organizations. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Knights Templars, American Legion, Illinois Medical Society, Mississippi Valley Medical Association, and a charter member of Pleasant Hill Lions club. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. For several years he was president of Citizens State Bank in Pleasant Hill. He was honored with 50 year membership in the Illinois Medical Society, July 1954. He was also engaged in managing his farms.
  The following poem by Edgar A. Guest is used as a tribute to Dr. Russell Perry Wells:

  The old-time family doctor

  We'd find him at the door.
  He welcomed us as babies and

  The black bag that he carried

  And just the ones we needed
  He'd leave for us to take.
  The old-time family doctor
  More like him there should be.
  To give our hearts to patients the self-same way as he;
  To hurry to the bedside
  No matter when the call.
  Devoted, wise and gentle
  The friend of one and all.
  
  Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Bittle of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Maxine Galloway of Pleasant Hill, a sister, Mrs. Maude Thomas of Pleasant Hill; a half-brother, Frank McCartney of Summer Hill; a grandson, Jackie Pace of Lancaster, California, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in the Baptist church in Pleasant Hill Thursday afternoon at 2, with the Rev. Joe Maynard of Pittsfield officiating. Burial will be in Crescent Heights Cemetery at Pleasant Hill
