I have Civil War Discharge "by reason of disability," for John Fortune, Private in the 99th Company, Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, dated August 14, 1863 at Vicksburg, Miss.

Vernon William Wells, Sr. has his sword. Statistics on John were as stated: "Born in Nelson County, State of Virginia, aged 58 years, 5 feet 9 ½ inches tall, sandy complexion, blue eyes.

Lt. Col. Lemuel Parke (or Paske) (not clearly legible)
Commanding the Regiment

Signed by the Paymaster at Memphis, Tenn. Aug. 1, 1863, by O. W. McLean (or McCann?)
"Paid in Full on Final Statements"

However, my grandmother, Ann Maria Fortune Wells, said her father was known as a travelling doctor and dentist, and my father, Jesse William Wells had many tools of these trades, which had been his grandfather's. He gave the mortar and pestle to his grandson, Dr. James R. Wells, but I don't know what became of the rest….
