"Buried at Luray, Licking County, Ohio in George's Chapel Cemetery. Luray
not on the map. No chapel left at the cemetery. Located on US Highway 40
between Kirkersville & Hebron. From a little white church at crossroads
turn north to large white house on little knoll, less than half mile from
highway. Fork in the road and left turn circles cemetery. The other
turns to east. 1½ acre cemetery, wire fence, no gate, sets about 5 feet above
road. No graves in front of lot (probably the chapel was there). A lot
of Wells buried there, some Holmes, Howards and Pumfrey. Found Richard Wells
only 25 years old in old cemetery south of highway. A newer cemetery and
more modern chapel."
Mable's description
of the location is still fairly accurate. Luray is at the intersection of
State Route 40 (National Road) and State Route 37 (between Lancaster and
Granville). The intersection of SR37 and Township Road 40 (Refugee Road) is
1/2 mile north of Luray. The cemetery is 1/10 mile west of this
intersection. The intersection is no longer a fork, but the typical two way
stop at a major road. Refugee Road makes an unusual detour to the north to
avoid the cemetery. So George apparently laid out the cemetery straddling
the Refugee Tract and U.S. Military District.
