Wells books and Genealogies
available for purchase

NOTE: The inclusion of a book or publication on this list does NOT necessarily imply that it is of any significant genealogical research value. Biographies do not always contain personal family information. It is the responsiblity of the purchaser to research the item before buying to make sure that it meets expectation. In some cases several copies of a book may be available from several sources. Prices of the offerings are shown and in some cases they seem horribly overpriced while others are bargins. Sometimes there will be several prices, so check the quality of the book and price before ordering. Also factor in the cost of shipment. Some will ship free and others will charge a "handling" fee that boosts the actual cost.

Many of the links will lead to a book indexing service. To locate the actual item you will need to enter the author's name and/or title to view the holdings and firm from which to purchase the item. Some items may no longer be available if they have been sold since being included on this listing.

Books are listed in no particular order. There are many more books available. Try some of the links and do a search.

McDonald, John: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF GENERAL NATHANIEL MASSIE, GENERAL DUNCAN McARTHUR, CAPTAIN WILLIAM WELLS, AND GENERAL SIMON KENTON: WHO WERE EARLY SETTLERS IN THE WESTERN COUNTRY.
Cincinnati: Printed for the Author.. 1838. 267pp. Contemporary three quarter morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Extremities rubbed, outer front hinge worn. Scattered foxing, heavy at times (especially affecting titlepage). Good. Presentation inscription from the author, dated 1850, to W.H. Safford, with Safford's ownership signature on the titlepage. McDonald, who took part in many of the events he details herein, personally knew the subjects of this work, who were border Indian fighters. "He was an actor in many of the scenes he describes; and the incidents detailed in this volume, which he did not witness himself, were communicated to him by the actors..he is thus original authority, and the fullest reliance may be placed on his statements" - Thomson. The Massie sketch is mainly concerned with his doings in southern Ohio in the 1790s. That of MacArthur covers the Indian struggles of the 1790s and, in great detail, his part in the campaigns of the War of 1812 in Michigan and western Canada. This section occupies almost a third of the book. The Wells sketch is almost entirely about Wayne's campaign of 1794. The Kenton sketch is devoted mainly to his role in opening Kentucky in the 1770s. SABIN 43160. HOWES M83 ("aa"). THOMSON 750. JILLSON, p.100. Book # WRCAM 3487

McDonald, John: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF GENERAL NATHANIEL MASSIE, GENERAL DUNCAN McARTHUR, CAPTAIN WILLIAM WELLS, AND GENERAL SIMON KENTON: WHO WERE EARLY SETTLERS IN THE WESTERN COUNTRY.
Dayton. Printed for the Author.. 1852. 267pp. plus [1]p. of ads. Original gilt cloth. Very good. Reprinted from the first Dayton edition of 1838.
