Harry was born the slave of Nathaniel Wells of Pike Co, MS. Nathaniel gave
Harry to his son Robert Wells, when Harry was about 10 years old. In 1839
Robert sold Harry to his brother Thomas Wells of Hinds Co, MS. Harry's
parents were Jenny (owned by Nathaniel Wells) and a slave of a man named
Turner (Joseph?) who lived near Nathaniel Wells. I have been unable to find
any information on this Turner. Pike Co records were burned. Harry took the
surname of Turner after he was emancipated.
Harry's wife Martha was bought by Nathaniel Wells shortly before Harry and
Martha married, about 1840.
Harry also had a sister, Caroline, b. Feb, 1831, married Wash Robertson
(owned by Thomas Wells). Their children were Eleas, b. Oct, 1851 and
Tamer/Turner, b. Aug, 1853.
Martha was born in 1822. Harry and Martha would have been marrried in Hines
Co, MS.
Harry took the surname from his father who was owned by a Turner. Martha
appears to have taken Wells as her surname.
